WHITNEY BACK WITH CLIVE DAVIS

Pop By Paul Cashmere

17 September 2004

Whitney Houston will record her next album under the guidance of record company guru Clive Davis.

Houston will release her 7th album on her long-term label Arista, following Davis' return as head of the label.

Davis discovered Whitney Houston and acted as Executive Producer for her debut self-titled album in 1985. That album generated the hits 'Saving All My Love For You', 'How Will I Know' and 'The Greatest Love Of All'.

Last Wednesday, Davis was honored at the World Music Awards in Las Vegas. Houston flew in to perform in his honor.

Davis and Houston hold the record for seven consecutive number ones on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her catalogue has sold more than 125 million albums to date.

The new album will be their first work together in five years.

*Back in April, rumors first began bubbling about a reunion of music mogul Clive Davis and embattled superstar Whitney Houston. It was Davis in the early 80s who plucked a teenage Houston from obscurity and signed her to his Arista record label, where the young talent flew out of the blocks with the instant classics "You Give Good Love," "Saving All My Love For You," and "The Greatest Love of All."

In 2000, a nasty shakeup at Arista led to Davis forced departure from the company, and the launching of his own J Records label, which has since helped to re-energize the careers of music vets Luther Vandross, Carlos Santana and Rod Stewart among others.

Earlier this year Davis, 70, was named chairman and CEO of BMG North America which includes RCA, J Records, Jive, and ironically, Arista Records. News, once again, is surfacing about the not-so-secret Davis and Houston collabo on a new album, which is part of a multi-pronged campaign to carefully navigate the singer’s comeback.

If you believe the rumors, and the "New York Post," it was Davis who advised Whitney to go to rehab, as well as distance herself from jail-prone husband Bobby Brown. He also reportedly advised the chanteuse to keep out of the public eye until a clean-and-sober, grand-diva re-emergence at next year's Grammys where Clive hopes to debut a brand new single, from a brand album, by hopefully a brand new Whitney.
